There was no port forwarding on the modem, so I cannot create a VPN server using OpenVPN with the hotspot. I have decided that maybe it would be a bit smarter to create a VPN server at home, and open those ports here, and have the device "call home" so install a vpn client. The VPN still uses data over the 3G connection , therefore uses an Internet connection (and uses more as each packet probably has 10-20 bytes of overhead added).
